Meet Jamie Lee Francis
Artist. Illustrator. Designer. Storyteller.
Jamie Lee Francis has spent more than three decades creating — from graphic design and illustration to painting, murals, children's books and the pet portraits he loves drawing today.
about Jamie
From childhood drawings to professional portraits

I was born in 1970 in Hereford and as far as I can remember, I was always drawing at a very young age.
When I was at junior school I remember drawing a large picture of a castle with turrets and rope bridges, with hundreds of matchstick men swordfighting. My teacher was so impressed she took me to see the Headmistress where she awarded me with a lollypop!
At secondary school I excelled in art and my teacher recognised my talent. I was rewarded with the honour of painting the set for the school play 'Scrooge'.
After leaving school I was lucky enough to be enrolled into Herefordshire College of Art & Design where I studied a BTEC National Diploma in Display & Graphics. The course was extremely creative and varied which included graphic design, interior design, exhibition design, photography and fine art.
Two years later I won the Brian Hatton Award for Most Outstanding Student. I was then enrolled into Kingston University where I studied a BTEC Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design, and after two years, I graduated as a fully qualified graphic designer.
Although I have been a graphic designer for over 30 years working for many design agencies in London, Middlesex, Surrey and Herefordshire, my real passion is in illustration and painting.
I began drawing pets professionally about 15 years ago and I thoroughly enjoy it.
I especially adore dogs and have a beautiful black labrador called 'George' (pictured).
I can create portraits of any type of pet or animal, including dogs, cats and horses, capturing the character that makes each one unique.
I hope you enjoy looking at the Pet Portraits I have lovingly drawn.

This picture was so much fun to draw! It captures the unique personalities of friends, past and present who drink in my local community pub ‘The Britannia Inn’ in Hereford. A total of 165 people are on the picture! This A1 size picture took a staggering 260 hours to draw over 7 months. I sold prints to raise money for St Michael’s Hospice in Hereford raising a total sum of £380. It was also featured in the Hereford Times Newspaper and the original drawing is currently on loan which takes pride of place on the wall in the pub. It is well worth a look, and a pint!

I went to Glastonbury Festival for the first time in 1994 and was absolutely blown away, and just had to put this experience onto paper! In this A1 size picture are myself, my brother, cousins and friends. For me, it was the people there that made it so special who inspired me to travel. On my return I ended up going to the festival many times. The last being where David Bowie was headlining.

Commissioned by a friend, this famous photograph depicts the horror of the Vietnam War. The photo, taken by Sir Don McCullin shows an unidentified 5th Marine Regiment soldier experiencing severe combat fatigue, dissociation, and what is now recognised as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), clutching his rifle with a "thousand-yard stare". McCullin kneeled and took five identical frames in a row; the soldier did not blink or move an eyelash across any of the exposures. I used pencil and ink in my drawing and had to get the eyes ‘spot on’.
Oil Paintings
I began painting in oils in September 2005.
Most of my inspiration comes from nature and some of the experiences I have been lucky enough to see, and the places I have visited whilst travelling, such as; The vibrant and colourful sunsets at Joshua Tree National Park in California. The idyllic and sumptuous beaches of Thailand, and the remote jungle villages in the North. The magnificent Blue Mountains in Australia. The millions of rainbows that suddenly appear at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and the incredible and awe inspiring total eclipse of the sun in Zambia. The full moon glistening over Lake Malawi. The beautiful, stunning clear waters of Cuba, and the wonders of the Ancient Mayan temples hidden in the jungles of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.
All of my illustrations are unique, and my paintings are created using a blank canvas, infused with a brushstroke of imagination. Enjoy…

During a road trip to Cornwall, my friend (Maggie) and I camped at Lizard and took a stroll along nearby Kennack Sands. I captured this moment of Maggie looking out to see and a bird flying across the beach on my phone. When I returned home I painted this onto canvas for Maggie as a Christmas present.

After seeing the painting of 'Fisherman's Blues', a friend commissioned me to paint a similar painting as a gift for his girlfriend. Her name is painted on the side of the boat.

My inspiration for this painting is from a couple of natural scenes that I have seen in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside. A harvest moon gently floating around the clouds over the village of Eardisley, and a flooded woodland near the town of Leominster. The fisherman was added to complete the tranquil mood of this picture.

This picture was painted especially for my best friend Lee. I have so many fond memories travelling through Thailand with Lee and his wife Lisa, that I wanted to express it onto canvas. The image captures the memory of lazing on the sumptuous beaches of Koh Tao and Koh Samui, sipping on an ice cold 'coconut shake!'. The name on the boat is an addition to the painting and to the family, their beautiful daughter, Mie.

I visited Cuba in April 2006 and instantly fell in love with this beautiful and vibrant country. I have never seen the sea so blue and wanted to recreate these intense colours onto canvas.

After heavy snowfall in February 2007, I awoke to this delightful scene in Eardisley, Herefordshire. In the distance the bright orange sun was rising above the horizon. The fine lines of the branches in this painting were painted using just one strand of the paintbrush. This is the same technique used by the Surrealist and my inspiration, Salvador Dali.

Inspired by the song 'Fisherman's Blues' by The Waterboys and the beautiful remote Island of Koh Chaing in Thailand. During my two month stay I used to go night swimming and spent hours gazing at the full moon glistening on the water. This painting is dedicated to the Thai fishermen who brought me the catch of the day for dinner in the evenings!

Painted as a set using warm and earthly colours, it began with horizontal bands of colour, but with a little imagination the painting could easily be of anything you want to see.

Commissioned by my friend, Lee who asked for a calming and relaxing scene for his bedroom. Because we spent a lot of time travelling through Thailand, I thought it would be appropriate to paint a picture of paradise. The colours were chosen to compliment the decor of the bedroom and the painting was to hang against a chocolate brown wall to make it stand out.

As an artist, I am passionate about history and therefore, have a fascination for the wonders of the ancient world. This painting depicts the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt at dawn.

My fascination with the wonders of the ancient world continues in this painting of Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England. Historians believe this monument could have been built for human sacrifice or astronomy? The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year (June 21st) and marks the first day of summer. Thousands of people gather here every year to celebrate this event.

This painting was commissioned by my best friend Ricko. We travelled together to Africa in 2001 and during our visit we were lucky enough to witness the total eclipse of the sun in Zambia at 2pm in the afternoon. The day went into total darkness. We viewed the eclipse from a hilltop deep in the Zambian bush. Ricko appropriately named the hill 'Solstice Hill'. This natural phenomenon was the most amazing sight I have ever seen and I just had to express it onto canvas.
